Push-Pull

by Yule Heibel on July 7, 2003

Another article (in the NYTimes) about Bikram Choudhury’s successful make-over of yoga as an American money-making-machine venture. The Monday Magazine article I mentioned in an earlier post was better than this one, but you get the idea. My two bits: the word yoga is linked to our English word “yoke.” A yoke is never pushed: oxen (or people) pull it, and in that sense, yoga pulls you to another place. The amazing Mr. Choudhury has succeeded in making yoga pushy.
