January 2, 2017 (Monday)

by Yule Heibel on January 1, 2018

Woke up with a sore throat this morning. Heaven help me if I’m getting that awful cold A. is at long last getting over. Oh well. Trying not to feel all “January” here, but I have to admit, it’s not my favorite time of year, or favorite month. At all. Head down, get through it… Never feels like a “new year” – it just always feels like a massive difficulty. Today is still officially a holiday. Doesn’t feel like a holiday, either. Feels like Monday, only worse, because January. So, let’s see… How many of these coming up? Three more this month. Four in February, which is included in my dreaded months list, because weather. Ditto March. Then it’s April, and even around here, unless we get clobbered by blizzards, things should start to green up just a bit. It’s the deadness of nature which distresses me. The leafless trees, the complete surfeit of black, gray, brown everywhere: trees, roads, asphalt, dirty frozen snow, roofs…

But seriously, at my age I can’t possibly be wishing for time – for a particular month (or two or three) – to pass more quickly, more obliviously, more unobserved, can I? There’s a conflict, I guess.
