So, about that Vice video about Charlottesville, featuring the avowed racist Chris Cantwell… My basic position is that racism, which for some implies choosing your allies based on their ethnicity (race), is a stupid position to take on several counts. First, you will end up with lots of people on your “team” who shouldn’t be there. They will be on your “team” simply because they’re the “right” color / ethnicity / religion. Second, you will exclude many people who should be on your team simply because they’re the “wrong” color / ethnicity / religion. Thus, you will (potentially) deprive yourself of your best allies. Points one and two are obviously two sides of the same coin. Others might argue for keeping the straight-up racial (racist) heuristic (mental shortcut) because it has “proven” itself over time as the one which endures. (And boy, endure it sure as hell does…) But longevity is no excuse if, in its wake, it has dragged with it so much stupidity, is my take.
